Dan releasing a bird

A lifelong northeast Ohio resident, Dan was born and raised in Willoughby and now lives in Andover with his wife and their two dogs. Outside the office, Dan enjoys a simple, hands-on lifestyle that keeps him grounded. He and his wife manage a 100-acre family farm where they tend to seasonal crops and care for their animals, including a few upland game birds they raise as a conservation hobby. Whether it’s stacking hay, cutting firewood, or doing chores around the property, Dan values hard work and time outdoors.

When he’s not working or farming, Dan likes to stay active. He competes in precision archery competitions across the country, plays in local softball and volleyball leagues, and enjoys time spent training their energetic German Shorthaired Pointer. He also finds relaxation in the kitchen, cooking meals for family and friends, skills he’s sharpened with a bit of culinary training. Dan is actively involved in his church and always willing to lend a hand wherever needed. Dan has a knack for fun, focus, and just the right amount of quirk. Read his Q&A, as you might be surprised how much you have in common!

Rooted in Values, Driven by Purpose: Dan Lane Up Close

Dan performing archery

What is your favorite non-work-related hobby?

I have two: archery and cooking. I’ve been into archery for years; it keeps me focused and humble, whether I’m practicing at home or traveling to tournaments. Cooking is a close second. I enjoy unwinding in the kitchen and trying new recipes, especially after a long day. I’ve picked up some great tips over time and enjoy making meals for family and friends.

What are you currently reading, and what’s your all-time favorite book?

I usually have a few books going at once. Right now, I’m reading The Trading Game by Gary Stevenson, The Mental Game by Larry Donnelly, Leadership Lessons of Jesus by Bob Briner, and Good to Great by Jim Collins. My favorite books tend to be the ones that challenge me to grow whether professionally, personally, or spiritually.

Dan Current Current Reading List

  1. The Deficit Myth - Stephanie Kelton
  2. Good to Great – Jim Collins
  3. The Trading Game – Gary Stevenson
  4. The Way of the Seal – Mark Divine
  5. Mans Search for Meaning – Viktor Frankl
  6. Tap Dancing to Work – Carol Loomis
  7. The Maine Woods – Henry David Thoreau
  8. Liars Poker – Michael Lewis

What’s your favorite TV show, and if you could play a character, who would it be?

Definitely The Office. It’s one of those shows that never gets old. I wouldn’t say I’d be any particular character, but I always thought it was a missed opportunity that we never got to see a scene with Robert California, Nate, and Creed together; now that would’ve been entertaining.

Are you an early bird or a night owl?

Very much an early bird. I’m usually at my desk before 5 a.m., as it is a peaceful time to focus before the day gets moving.

What’s the most irrational superstition you have?

Chewing gum. If I’m shooting archery, I need one stick. If I’m playing sports, it has to be two. I can’t explain why, it just feels right!

What’s a skill you have outside the office that you’re proud of?

Probably my persistence. Whether it’s figuring out a tough project on the farm, learning how to fix something, or trying to cook a meal just right, I don’t give up until I get it.

If you weren’t in this profession, what would you be doing?

If I had more land, I think I’d enjoy farming full time. There’s something rewarding about working the land and seeing the results of your labor. If that wasn’t an option, I’ve always liked working with my hands so hardwood flooring might have been a good fit too.

What’s your favorite vacation destination?

So far, Alaska tops the list. The scenery, wildlife, and slower pace were unforgettable. But, someday, I would like to go backpacking through England, Scotland, and Ireland.

What’s your biggest personal and professional goal for the next 5–10 years?

Personally, it’s about making sure I’m setting a strong example and leaving something meaningful behind, both in how I live and work. For the practice, I’d like to help guide and mentor the next generation of advisors and create more opportunities for our team and clients to come together through community events and causes we care about.

Between the Lines: A Conversation with Bill

What is your favorite non-work-related hobby?

When my kids were younger, I was their coach in just about everything, baseball, basketball, cross country. I loved it! Coaching wasn’t just about sports; it was about shaping character, building teamwork, and being there for the wins and the lessons.
These days, I’ve traded the whistle for a garden spade. I’ve really come to enjoy gardening. There’s something incredibly rewarding about growing vegetables, fruit, and flowers and sharing them with neighbors and friends.

What are you currently reading, and what’s your all-time favorite book?

Right now I’m into Zero to One by Peter Thiel and Blake Masters. It’s all about innovation and building something that’s truly new. It reminds me that success is often about seeing what others don’t. As for favorites, I’d say anything that stretches my thinking, but the quote that sticks with me is from Roger Bannister: “Just because they say it’s impossible doesn’t mean you can’t do it.

What’s your favorite TV show, and if you could play a character, who would it be?

I’m not a big TV guy, but I got hooked on Peaky Blinders. It’s gritty, historical, and surprisingly thought-provoking. My ancestors came from England around that time, so it felt a little like peeking into their world. I’m not sure which character I’d be, but definitely one of the good guys trying to make sense of a complicated world.

Are you an early bird or a night owl?

Naturally an early bird for me. I enjoy the quiet, clarity, stillness of morning. It’s when I do my best uninterrupted thinking and planning. The solitude provides much inspiration!

What’s the most irrational superstition you have?

I always try to exit through the same door I entered. I think it’s something my grandmother told me as a kid. No clue why, but it stuck. I don’t agree with Sartre about ‘No Exit’, my grandmother most likely agreed. There’s always a way out!

What’s a skill you have outside the office that you’re proud of?

Parenting. It’s not a skill you ever fully master, but I’m proud of how I’ve shown up for my family. Raising two sets of twins has been both chaotic and beautiful. I’ve enjoyed every season of their lives, and I’m grateful the journey keeps going.

If you weren’t in this profession, what would you be doing?

I’d be a teacher or a coach or both. Helping people set goals and get where they want to go, especially when they didn’t think it was possible, is very rewarding.

What’s your favorite vacation destination?

For 25 years, my family and I have vacationed at Emerald Isle, North Carolina. It’s simple, quiet, and peaceful, exactly what we’ve always needed. Going forward, I think our “vacations” will be wherever our kids end up. Spending time with them will always be the goal.

What’s the biggest goal you have personally and for your practice over the next 5–10 years?

Personally, it’s about staying connected to my family and growing alongside them, through every life stage. Professionally, it’s about helping more families feel confident about their future. I treat every client like family, and I take that responsibility seriously. Their goals become my goals, and that’s what keeps me going.

Off the Clock: Meet Matt Price

What is your favorite non-work-related hobby?

Coaching! Besides spending time with my kids, coaching middle school football and high school basketball at Wadsworth has been a big part of my life. It’s more than a game, it’s about building character, investing in the next generation, and staying connected with the community.

What are you currently reading, and what’s your all-time favorite book?

Right now, I’m reading Quiet Strength by Tony Dungy, a great read on leading with purpose and humility. But my favorite of all time is Chop Wood, Carry Water by Joshua Medcalf. It’s packed with lessons on consistency, discipline, and doing the little things right. It’s the kind of book that sticks with you, and I often share it with the teams I coach.

What’s your favorite TV show, and if you could play a character, who would it be?

Seinfeld has definitely grown on me over the years. The older I get, the funnier it becomes, probably because life is starting to feel like a few of those episodes! If I had to pick a character, I’d go with Jerry. After seeing him live, I found a lot of his observational humor totally relatable. Plus, he somehow always keeps his cool.

Are you an early bird or a night owl?

With three kids and a packed schedule, I don’t get to choose, I’m both! Early mornings for planning, late nights for catching up. Sleep is optional, but coffee is not!

What’s the most irrational superstition you have?

Peanut butter must go on first when I make a PB&J. It’s not just a preference; it’s a way of life. Jelly first? That’s just wrong. I don’t know if it’s superstition or just sandwich survival instincts, but I’m not taking any chances with sticky bread disasters.

What’s a skill you have outside the office that you’re proud of?

Leadership development. Whether it’s on the court or in a huddle, it is about helping people grow, work as a team, and realize their potential. Watching that development happen, especially in young athletes, is one of the most rewarding things I get to do.

If you weren’t in this profession, what would you be doing?

Coaching full-time at a higher level. There’s something powerful about motivating others to chase big goals, both in sports and in life.

Matthew and his family

What’s your favorite vacation destination?

We recently took our first trip to Hawaii, and it really does live up to the hype. Unbelievable views, laid-back vibe, and the perfect spot for family memories.

What’s the biggest goal you have personally and for your practice over the next 5–10 years?

Personally, I want to continue developing my leadership development series I use with the teams I coach. It is something I’m passionate about expanding. Professionally, it would be to continue to grow and serve people looking for financial guidance as well as begin to develop and train a new group of advisors.

Kelsey on a kayak

What is your favorite non-work-related hobby?

Getting out on the water in my kayak is my happy place! But anything outdoorsy like hiking, nature walks, or just getting some fresh air while walking the friends’ dogs in the neighborhood are favorites. If there’s sunshine (or mud), I’m in!

What are you currently reading, and what’s your all-time favorite book?

Right now, I’m reading Hemingway’s Cat. Yes, cats and Hemingway, what’s not to love! But my all-time favorite is To Kill a Mockingbird. I even had it on VHS growing up, which should tell you how obsessed I was (and still am) with that wonderful story.

What is your favorite TV show and what character would you portray if you were cast in it?

The Office. If I were cast, I’d be the female version of Darryl, chill, musical, and a soft spot for animals.

Are you an early bird or a night owl?

Night owl. It’s my favorite time to wind down and enjoy some peace and quiet. It gives me a chance to reflect on the lessons of the day.

What is the most irrational superstition that you have?

I still hop over sidewalk cracks like I’m in a hopscotch tournament. I think you may agree that some old habits die hard, and we just can’t risk our moms’ back.

What is a skill you have outside of the office that you are most proud of?

Hopscotch, ha ha! But seriously, I played violin for nine years, and I’ve recently started picking it back up again. It’s like riding a bike, with strings and a bow but slightly more screeching while knocking the rust off.

If you weren’t in this profession, what career field or job would be your next choice?

I’d be a dog groomer! I’ve actually been looking into it as something I might do in my spare time. Being around dogs and making them feel fabulous, sounds perfect to me. Yes, I do love animals!

What is your favorite vacation destination?

New Zealand and Ireland are tied at the top of my list. Give me lush landscapes, cozy pubs, and some sheep-dotted hillsides, and I’m in heaven.

Kelsey with a goat

What is the biggest goal you have personally and for the practice in the next 5-10 years?

Personally, I want to plan more time for the things that bring me joy like traveling, trying new things, and learning just for fun. Professionally, I’m all about soaking up knowledge and continuing to grow so I can bring even more value to our team and our clients.

Managing the Moving Pieces: Running with Sarah

What is your favorite non-work-related hobby?

Camping with my family! There’s something about being out in nature with no distractions that grounds me. One of my favorite trips was exploring the Black Hills National Forest and Buffalo Gap National Grassland in South Dakota, beautiful!

What are you currently reading, and what’s your all-time favorite book?

Right now, I’m reading Becoming Happy and Healthy by Jeanine Amapola. It’s a thoughtful mix of motivation and personal growth. My all-time favorite? That’s a tough one, but I always go back to books that leave me feeling uplifted and inspired.

Favorite TV show—and if you were cast in it, who would you be?

Modern Family is my go-to.  I’d probably be, Claire Dunphy, perfectionist, ultra-organized and constantly juggling a dozen things at once. Let’s just say, I can relate.

Early bird or night owl?

Definitely an early bird. As a runner, there’s nothing better than hitting the pavement before the day begins. It’s my time to lace up, reset, and start fresh before the world gets busy.

Do you have any irrational superstitions?

Honestly, I don’t think I have any, unless triple-checking the coffee pot before leaving the house counts?

What’s a skill you have outside the office that you’re proud of?

Running! It’s more than exercise for me; it’s a challenge that’s helped me grow in discipline and resilience. I recently adopted a pup, and I’m excited to have a new running buddy in Penny.

If you weren’t in this profession, what would you do?

I’d probably be an elementary school teacher. I love kids and always admired how teachers shape young hearts and minds.

Favorite vacation destination?

Charleston, South Carolina. I enjoy to the charm, the food, the history and the beaches.

What’s your biggest personal and professional goal for the next 5–10 years?

Personally, one of my biggest goals in the next few years is to run a half-marathon. Keep me motivated and ask me how I’m doing! Professionally, I’m focused on contributing to the continued growth of Pillar Financial Group and helping ensure we make a lasting impact in the community and clients we serve.
